A special police unit has been formed to recover looted and illegal firearms, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday.
He said rewards ranging from Tk 10,000 to Tk 200,000 would be offered to anyone providing information leading to the recovery of such weapons.
The minister made the announcement while attending a meeting at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium to review the country's crime situation over the past three months with senior Bangladesh Police officials.
During the meeting, police officials briefed the minister on their need for increased technological support and other resources to strengthen law enforcement operations.
Salahuddin said the government was working to meet the police's requirements and issued necessary instructions to improve the overall law-and-order situation.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he said the law-and-order situation would gradually improve and that police had been given appropriate directions to achieve that goal.
