Court Acquits Tarique, Babar and Others in Bribery Case

A Dhaka court today acquitted eight individuals, including BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, of charges related to allegedly accepting Tk21 crore in bribes to clear Bashundhara Group Vice-Chairman Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir in the Sabbir murder case.


The other acquitted individuals include Miah Nur Uddin Apu, Qazi Salimul Haque Kamal, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Shafiat Sobhan, Sadat Sobhan, and Abu Sufian.

Judge Md Abu Taher of Dhaka Special Judge Court-3 delivered the verdict this morning, as confirmed by defense counsels Borhan Uddin and Aminul Gani Titu.

The case, filed on October 4, 2007, at Ramna Police Station, accused the defendants of accepting bribes in exchange for removing Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir’s name from the murder case of Bashundhara Group director Sabbir.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the charge sheet against the eight individuals on April 24, 2008, and the court framed charges against them on July 14, 2008.
