Food Safety Authority Files 44 Cases, Fines Tk10.65m

The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) collected Tk10.65 million in fines and filed 44 cases during food safety drives across the country in September 2026.

During the month, the authority also monitored 1,307 food establishments in different parts of the country.

In Dhaka, 26 drives were conducted under the Food Safety Act. A total of Tk1.6 million in fines was imposed on 12 establishments, while 14 cases were filed.

The inspections uncovered various violations, including operating without mandatory registration, preparing food in unhygienic conditions, storing unlabeled fish, meat and other food items in refrigerators, and failing to display trade licences, health certificates for food workers and pest-control documentation.

Another 28 establishments were inspected in different districts. Inspectors found several irregularities, including preparing chanachur by trampling it underfoot, using burnt oil and unauthorised chemical colours, the presence of cockroaches and bedbugs at production sites, using unauthorised ghee, using kewra water in biryani preparation, failing to provide product labels and producing food in dirty and unhygienic conditions.

The establishments were fined a total of Tk4.57 million and 30 cases were filed over the violations.

In addition, 31 establishments were fined a total of Tk3.895 million through summary trials conducted under the leadership of judges of the Pure Food Court and metropolitan magistrates.

Overall, 71 drives were conducted across the country in September, resulting in total fines of Tk10.65 million and 44 cases.

Alongside enforcement, the authority has also intensified monitoring of food establishments nationwide. During September, markets, hotels and restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops and food production and processing facilities were among the 1,307 establishments monitored.

The authority said establishments were given necessary instructions where appropriate, while legal action was taken for violations.
