This approval came during the 62nd meeting of the Trustee Board, held at the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, as announced in a press release from the ministry today.
The meeting was chaired by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry, with the attendance of key officials, including Adviser to the Ministries of Home and Agriculture Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministries of Women and Children and Social Welfare Sharmin S Murshid, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Secretary of Environment Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of Finance Dr. Md. Khairuzzaman Mozumder, and other high-ranking officials.
The newly approved projects are designed to strengthen climate resilience, protect the environment, and promote sustainable agricultural and urban development.
Key initiatives include enhancing onion seed storage and production, implementing climate-smart agricultural practices in vulnerable areas such as char, haor, and coastal regions, and restoring crucial water bodies in major urban centers including Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet.
Further efforts will include large-scale afforestation projects along five canals in Narayanganj and conservation of the Lobonadaha Canal in Gazipur. To address water scarcity, solar-powered deep tube wells will be installed in Rangamati’s hill tracts, and safe drinking water initiatives will be rolled out in communities across Bandarban.
Other noteworthy projects involve distributing subsidized jute bags as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic, expanding palm and mangrove plantations, supporting biodiversity conservation, and researching antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The projects will be executed by various government bodies and research institutions, including the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board, the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Chittagong, the Department of Public Health Engineering, Bangladesh Agricultural University, the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, and the Department of Environment, among others.
These new projects reflect the government’s commitment to mitigating climate change impacts and fostering a sustainable future for Bangladesh.
