UGC plans major investment in university research, increases PhD fellowships
University Grants Commission (UGC) has undertaken major investment plans including increasing the number of PhD and postdoctoral fellowships to increase international-standard research and create a sustainable research friendly environment in the country’s universities.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed said this while addressing the 179th full commission meeting of commission today, said a press release.
At the meeting, the chairman said the number of UGC’s own PhD scholarships has been increased from 75 to 100. There are plans to gradually increase the number to 500 from next year, he added.
Besides, opportunities for PhD studies abroad have been increased from 10 to 35, while initiatives have been taken to increase the number of postdoctoral fellowships, he said.
The chairman said a proposal for special allocation in this regard will be submitted to the government in the next fiscal year.
He said, it is essential to expand opportunities for domestic and foreign PhD studies to address the shortage of quality teachers at universities. The UGC’s goal is to make research one of the major activities of universities and connect research findings with solving the country’s real-life problems and the development of industry and the economy.
He further said that investment in research would be made strategic and outcome-based in the future, and universities making effective contributions to research and a knowledge-based economy would be given priority in funding.
The meeting approved the “UGC Promotional and Academic Staff Development Research Project Policy, 2026”.
UGC members Professor Dr Masuma Habib, Professor Mehedi Hasan Khan, Professor Dr Md Aslam Hossain and Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Chowdhury were present at the meeting, reports BSS.
