Malaysia’s former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has been taken to hospital for medical observation after suffering a fall at his residence, raising fresh concerns about the health of the country’s most enduring political figure. The 100-year-old statesman was conscious following the incident and was moved to the National Heart Institute as a precautionary measure.
According to people close to him, Mahathir fell while moving from one part of his balcony into the living room. Doctors are monitoring his condition, although it remains unclear whether he will require a prolonged hospital stay. Those around him said it was too early to determine the full impact of the fall, but emphasised that he was alert after the incident.
Mahathir has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, largely related to heart complications. He has previously undergone bypass surgeries and has been hospitalised several times for fatigue and related issues. In July last year, he was admitted briefly after feeling unwell following a public picnic held to mark his 100th birthday.
Despite his advancing age and recurring health concerns, Mahathir has remained mentally sharp and publicly active, often commenting on national and international political developments. His resilience has long been a defining feature of his public life, earning him admiration across generations in Malaysia and beyond.
Widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most influential leaders, Mahathir played a pivotal role in transforming Malaysia from an agriculture-based economy into a rapidly industrialising nation. His first and longest term as prime minister spanned from 1981 to 2003, a period marked by ambitious infrastructure projects, economic reforms and a strong assertion of national sovereignty.
In a dramatic political comeback, he returned to office in 2018 at the age of 92, leading an opposition alliance to a historic electoral victory. He served until 2020, becoming the world’s oldest elected leader at the time and reinforcing his reputation as a political phenomenon.
As Mahathir remains under observation, many Malaysians are watching closely, hoping for a swift recovery for a leader whose life and legacy have been deeply intertwined with the nation’s modern history.
