Bangladesh and Uruguay today signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the State Guest House Padma, Dhaka.

Bangladesh and Uruguay on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise regular and structured bilateral political consultations, marking a new phase in diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The MoU was concluded following the first-ever round of bilateral political consultations since Bangladesh and Uruguay established diplomatic relations in 1972.

Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Uruguay’s non-resident Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, signed the agreement and led their respective delegations at the consultations held at the State Guest House Padma.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed existing cooperation and explored ways to expand collaboration across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, science and technology, defence training, disaster management, health, education, energy, agriculture, sports and capacity building.

Bangladesh underscored the importance of stronger private sector engagement, highlighting the need for regular interaction between the apex chambers of commerce and industry of the two countries to boost trade and investment.

The Uruguayan delegation expressed keen interest in deepening cooperation in priority areas such as agriculture, fisheries and livestock, energy and sports.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, reaffirming their shared commitment to multilateralism and cooperation within the United Nations framework.

Bangladesh briefed Uruguay on the humanitarian situation of Rohingya refugees and sought its continued support on the issue.

Both countries agreed to maintain close diplomatic engagement, hold the next round of consultations at a mutually convenient time and promote high-level exchanges to further strengthen bilateral relations.
