The Bangladesh-India joint venture power plant generated 640 million units of electricity in December, ranking first among all power producers including independent power producers (IPPs), officials said.
The power plant contributed 11.5 percent of the country’s total electricity generation of 5,531 million units
General Manager of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant GM Tariqul Islam said the country’s fuel security has improved significantly with around 800,000 metric tonnes of coal unloaded over the past two months.
He said the plant currently has a coal stock of about 200,000 tonnes which is expected to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
Built under Bangladesh-India bilateral cooperation, the Maitree project uses imported coal and ultra-supercritical technology to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions.
Its environmental protection measures include a flue gas desulfurisation unit, electrostatic precipitator, a 275-metre chimney, closed-cycle cooling system and a zero liquid discharge facility, reports UNB.
Despite reliance on imported fuel, the plant’s scale, consistent performance and strong fuel supply management continue to ensure stable and relatively low-cost electricity to the national grid, supporting industrial activities and strengthening Bangladesh’s energy security, the official added.
