Four children drown in Atrai river in separate incidents
Bodies of two children who drowned in the Atrai river during taking bath in the Bhushir Bandar area of Sadar upazila in the district on Wednesday were recovered today.
Officer-in-Charge of Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station Nurun Nabi told BSS that three children went to bathe in Atrai river near the sluice gate in Beguntara village of Bhushir Bandar in Sadar upazila around noon on Wednesday. One of them managed to swim back safely, while two children, named Sharmi and Brishti, drowned.
A diving team of the Dinajpur Fire Service recovered the body of 12-year-old Sharmi from the spot at around 12:30 am on Wednesday night.
At 10:00 am today, the body of 11-year-old Brishti was recovered from Jhanjira Firingi Ghat, about five kilometres downstream from the site of the incident in the Atrai River.
Sharmi Islam, 12, a seventh-grade student and daughter of Shafiqul Islam, and Brishti, 11, a fifth-grade student and daughter of Babul Islam. Both were from Hargan village under Sundarban Union of Sadar upazila.
After the Johor prayers today, namaz-e-janaza were held for the two children, and they were buried side by side in their family graveyard.
BSS Naogaon Correspondent meanwhile reported that two eight-year-old children drowned while they were fishing in Atrai river near Shimultali Bridge in Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district around today,
The deceased children were Jisan, 8, son of Tohidul Islam of Rospur village under Khelna Union, and Tahmid Hossain, 8, son of Delwar Hossain of the same village.
According to police, Jisan and Tahmid left home around noon without their families’ knowledge for fishing in the Atrai River near their home.
They drowned after falling into the river while fishing near the riverbank. As they did not know how to swim, they went missing after being swept away by the current.
As they were missing for a long time, local people began searching in the river. At one point, they recovered the two children unconscious and took them to the upazila health complex, where the attending physician declared both of them dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamoirhat Police Station Mintu Rahman said police visited the scene and necessary steps are being taken in consultation with the family members, reports BSS.
