August inflation remains virtually unchanged around 8.3%

Dhaka, Sept 7 – Bangladesh's general point-to-point inflation fell slightly to 8.26 percent in August 2026, down from 8.32 percent in July, mainly on the back of a decline in food inflation, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Food inflation dropped to 7.02 percent in August from 7.16 percent in July, while non-food inflation edged up slightly to 9.32 percent from 9.28 percent over the same period.

August's general inflation was also markedly lower than the 9.42 percent recorded in May, pointing to a sustained moderation in overall price pressure over recent months.

Inflation remained slightly higher in rural areas than in urban areas during August. Rural inflation stood at 8.31 percent, with food inflation at 7.01 percent and non-food inflation at 9.59 percent.

In urban areas, general inflation reached 8.20 percent in August, with food inflation at 7.04 percent and non-food inflation at 8.97 percent.

The 12-month moving average inflation also declined to 8.66 percent for the period from September 2025 to August 2026, compared with 9.58 percent in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the Wage Rate Index rose 8.05 percent year-on-year in August, slightly down from 8.22 percent in July. - UNB
