Bangladesh Set for First Male PM in 35 Years
Bangladesh is poised to have a male Prime Minister for the first time in nearly 35 years, following unofficial results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election indicating a sweeping victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance.
Preliminary figures show the BNP-led alliance securing a clear majority in parliament, placing it in a strong position to form the next government.
Party insiders say BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to take office as Prime Minister once the results are finalised.
If confirmed, it would mark the first time since 1989 that a man has held the post. The last male Prime Minister was Kazi Zafar Ahmed.
Since 1990, the country’s leadership has largely alternated between Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, both of whom served multiple terms as head of government.
The current outcome remains unofficial. The Election Commission is expected to announce the final results before the new government is formally constituted.
