Govt Launches Nationwide Rooftop Solar Expansion Drive

The government has launched a nationwide initiative to develop a network of local rooftop solar entrepreneurs and service providers as part of efforts to accelerate renewable energy expansion.

Under the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-2030, electricity distribution companies have begun accepting applications from eligible service providers across designated districts and geographic zones, the Power Division said.

Approved providers will offer technical support, financing packages, customer services, and operation and maintenance for rooftop solar systems and related green technologies.

The initiative aims to reduce barriers to entry for small and medium-sized enterprises, youth, women entrepreneurs and technology startups.

Local firms will also be encouraged to form strategic partnerships with established national companies and investors to strengthen their technical and financial capacity.

Service providers will be selected through a transparent and competitive process. Both individual companies and joint ventures will be eligible to apply, allowing smaller and newer businesses to partner with established firms.

The government aims to expand rooftop solar beyond major companies and urban centres by establishing a nationwide service network, including in rural and remote areas.

The framework is expected to encourage providers to offer affordable and innovative investment and service packages while increasing competition in the rooftop solar market.

The government is also working on measures to attract rooftop solar investment, including incentives, tax and duty benefits, easier access to low-cost financing and startup funding for new and innovative businesses.

According to the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-2030, Bangladesh aims to increase the share of renewable energy in total electricity generation to 20% by 2030, including a target of 5,500MW from rooftop solar.

The strategy seeks to build a secure, affordable, sustainable and low-carbon energy system while strengthening energy security, economic growth, industrialisation and climate resilience.

The Power Division said skilled workers, local entrepreneurs, investors and an effective service network would be essential to achieving the country's renewable energy targets.

The initiative is also expected to create opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses, local investment, skills development and employment, particularly in underserved areas.
