Govt to Buy Rooftop Solar Power at Tk 10.50 Per Unit

The government will purchase surplus electricity generated by eligible rooftop solar systems at Tk 10.50 per unit as part of efforts to expand renewable energy and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit disclosed the initiative while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop held at the BRAC Learning Centre in Jashore on Saturday.

Under the net-metering system, government and private buildings can install solar panels on unused rooftop space to meet their own electricity needs and supply surplus power to the national grid.

The government’s special incentive scheme sets the rate for surplus electricity from eligible rooftop solar systems with battery storage at Tk 10.50 per unit. Consumers installing qualifying systems by February 28, 2027, will be eligible for the incentive for three years, until February 28, 2030.

Amit said the initiative would help reduce pressure on the national grid while creating an economic opportunity for individuals and institutions that generate renewable electricity.

The workshop discussed the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy for 2026–2030, financing mechanisms, carbon credits and incentives for renewable energy development.

Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan chaired the workshop, which was attended by officials from the Power Division, representatives of GIZ Bangladesh, officials from different levels of the Khulna division and business leaders.
