Bangladesh at High Risk of Major Earthquake
Bangladesh is at risk of experiencing massive earthquakes similar to those that recently struck Myanmar and Thailand. High-risk regions include Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Mymensingh.
The Fire Service and Civil Defense issued this warning today in the wake of two powerful earthquakes that rocked Myanmar and Thailand on Friday.
According to a press release, the quakes measured 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude, causing significant destruction and loss of life. The statement cautioned that Bangladesh faces a similar threat, with Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Mymensingh particularly vulnerable.
The Fire Service stressed the need for constructing earthquake-resistant buildings in compliance with the Bangladesh National Building Code. It called for renovating unsafe structures and strengthening fire prevention measures in multi-storey and commercial buildings.
Ensuring that gas, water, and electricity lines are well-maintained is also crucial. Emergency contact numbers for the fire service, ambulance, police, and hospitals should be visibly displayed in all buildings.
The press release further recommended that households keep emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, radios with extra batteries, whistles, hammers, helmets, dry food, drinking water, essential medicines, and childcare items, stored in accessible locations for use during emergencies.
