UN Secretary-General António Guterres has praised Bangladesh for its exceptional generosity in hosting over one million Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar, describing it as "absolutely outstanding."

Speaking at an iftar event hosted by the Chief Adviser at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Saturday evening, Guterres expressed his deep gratitude to Bangladesh for sheltering the Rohingya refugees despite the significant social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by the region. He emphasized that Bangladesh’s actions serve as a remarkable example for the world in a time when many borders are closed to refugees.

"The generosity you’ve shown is absolutely outstanding," Guterres said, highlighting that the displaced Rohingyas had no other options but to rely on Bangladesh’s compassion.

Guterres also expressed solidarity with Bangladesh's ongoing reform efforts, stating that they would strengthen the country’s democratic institutions and move it closer to becoming one of the world's most exemplary democracies.

Chief Adviser Prof. Yunus, in his speech, called on the UN for assistance in combating misinformation, which he described as a major challenge. "We need your support, particularly in tackling misinformation that is harming us," he urged.

In closing, Prof. Yunus remarked on the timing of Guterres’ visit, noting that it coincided with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. "Your visit has brought an early Eid joy to the nation," he said, highlighting the significance of Guterres' presence during this special time.
