The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in two separate murder cases filed with Jatrabari Police Station and Mirpur Police Station, removing all legal obstacles to his release from custody.
The order was passed by a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher after hearing two separate bail petitions filed on behalf of the former chief justice.
Alongside granting bail, the court also issued two separate rules asking the government to explain why Khairul Haque should not be granted permanent bail in the cases.
According to court proceedings, the defence argued that the former chief justice had been implicated in the cases without sufficient grounds and sought judicial protection pending further legal proceedings.
Senior lawyers Md Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury, Motaher Hossain Sazu and Advocate Jahangir Hossain appeared for Khairul Haque during the hearing.
Additional Attorney General Md Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan represented the state.
With Tuesday’s order, there is now no legal bar to the release of the former chief justice unless he is shown arrested in any other pending case.
ABM Khairul Haque served as the 19th Chief Justice of Bangladesh and remains a controversial figure in the country’s legal and political arena, particularly over landmark judicial decisions delivered during his tenure.
