The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Bangladesh held discussions on Monday to integrate just transition principles into the country’s climate and development agenda.

Tuomo Poutiainen, Country Director of the ILO, led a delegation to meet Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Water Resources, at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

The meeting focused on aligning Bangladesh’s development goals with equitable climate action. Mr. Poutiainen highlighted the need to prepare the workforce for emerging green sectors through reskilling, upskilling, and inclusive social protection. “Workers, employers, and governments must jointly shape this transition to ensure no one is left behind,” he said.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a fair and inclusive transition. She emphasised the importance of embedding just transition principles into national policies, including the updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the forthcoming Climate Prosperity Plan.

The ILO proposed launching a Call to Action during the upcoming Just Transition Academy in Dhaka—a joint pledge by the government, employers, and workers' organisations. The Advisor welcomed the initiative and pledged support for Bangladesh to join as a key signatory.

Discussions also touched on integrating just transition frameworks into global supply chains, labour rights, and responsible investment. The ILO expressed readiness to provide technical assistance and collaborate with UN agencies and national bodies.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to building a future where economic development, environmental sustainability, and social justice go hand in hand.
