USF to award posthumous doctorates to Limon, Bristy
The University of South Florida will confer posthumous doctoral degrees on Bangladeshi students Jamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Bristy, who were killed in a tragic incident in the United States.
The honours will be presented at the university’s spring commencement ceremony on 9 May. Authorities have formally notified the Bangladesh Consulate in Miami, requesting that a representative receive the degrees on behalf of the victims’ families.
A consulate official is expected to attend the ceremony and accept the recognition.
Meanwhile, Bristy’s first funeral prayer is scheduled to be held in Tampa on 6 May at 2:00pm. Her body is set to be flown to Dhaka via Dubai on 7 May, with arrival expected at 8:40am on 9 May.
Limon, 27, a graduate of Khulna University, was pursuing a PhD in geography, environment and policy at USF. Bristy, also 27, studied at Noakhali Science and Technology University and was enrolled in chemical engineering studies in the US.
The two were reported missing on 16 April, prompting their families to alert local authorities after losing contact.
In connection with the killings, US authorities have arrested Hisham Abugharbeh, identified as Limon’s roommate, from his family residence. Following interrogation, Limon’s mutilated body was recovered on 24 April from garbage bags near the Howard Frankland Bridge, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Abugharbeh has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
