Six state-owned banks in Bangladesh had a combined Tk 1,47,776.36 crore in default loans as of June 30, 2026, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told Parliament on Sunday.

He disclosed the figure in a written response to a question from Bagerhat-4 MP Md Abdul Alim during the third session of Parliament. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal chaired the session.

The six banks are Agrani Bank PLC, Bangladesh Development Bank PLC, BASIC Bank PLC, Janata Bank PLC, Rupali Bank PLC and Sonali Bank PLC.

Among them, Janata Bank had the highest amount of default loans, at Tk 75,396.67 crore.

Agrani Bank had Tk 29,029.67 crore in default loans, while Rupali Bank had Tk 19,281.74 crore and Sonali Bank had Tk 15,048.39 crore.

BASIC Bank’s default loans stood at Tk 8,131.09 crore, while Bangladesh Development Bank had Tk 888.79 crore.

The figures highlight the significant burden of non-performing loans facing Bangladesh’s state-owned banking sector, with Janata Bank accounting for more than half of the combined default loans of the six institutions.
