A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member was killed, and another was injured in a road accident while chasing suspected smugglers in Benapole on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Mozamel Hossain, 45, and the injured BGB member is Delwar Hossain, 44.

According to sources, the two BGB personnel were informed about a group of smugglers staying at Baropota Bazar, allegedly carrying a drug consignment from India. They began pursuing the suspects when, at around 8:30 p.m., their motorbike lost control and crashed into a roadside tree in the Ahmed Bride area.

Both were critically injured and rushed to Sharsha Upazila Health Complex, where Mozamel was declared dead upon arrival, said Lt. Col. Khurshid Anowar, Commandant of BGB-21 Battalion.

Delwar was later transferred to Jashore General Hospital for further treatment, he added.
