US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he hoped military action against Iran would not be necessary, stressing that he preferred dialogue over conflict. Speaking to reporters at the premiere of a documentary about his wife Melania, Trump said he had strengthened the US military during his first term but hoped it would not be used.

“I built up the military in my first term, and now we have forces heading toward Iran, and hopefully we won’t have to use them,” he said.

When asked about possible talks with Tehran, Trump confirmed that discussions were ongoing and would continue. He added that powerful US ships were currently moving toward Iran but said it would be “great” if they were not needed.
