Carney Calls Talk of Canada Becoming US 51st State 'Crazy'

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has dismissed as "crazy" recent remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. Speaking to reporters after his swearing-in ceremony, Carney offered a blunt response to the comment, saying, "It's crazy. That's it."

Rubio, during a speech at the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec, defended US President Donald Trump's repeated comments about Canada potentially joining the US, claiming it would be beneficial for both nations.

In response to questions about relations with the US, Carney stated that he had no immediate plans to visit Washington but would engage with President Trump "at the appropriate moment."

In his first speech as prime minister, Carney outlined key priorities for his government, including protecting Canadian workers from US tariff threats and strengthening the economy by increasing Canadians' disposable income. While Carney did not confirm the timing of an early election, he hinted at significant upcoming announcements.

Carney, who was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister on Friday, also appointed a new cabinet as part of his administration’s efforts to address the country’s challenges.
