Michael Harari, a former Israeli ambassador, told Al Jazeera that US President Donald Trump’s endorsement of his ally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in the Israeli elections “did not make any difference” to the voters.

“Whoever has decided to support Prime Minister Netanyahu in the election did it with or without the endorsement of Mr Trump,” he said. “From my point of view, I think it is more important to Netanyahu himself than to the public opinion in Israel concerning or facing elections.”

He said that was despite the US’s “substantial” influence over Israel in the past 40 years.

Harari said a new Israeli government would “contribute substantially” to the resetting of American-Israeli relations, reports AL Jazeera.

“A new government will be much more pragmatic, much more open to have proper … discussions and listening … to the public opinion and the political scene in Washington,” he said.
