The Justice Department has arrested Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, a 51-year-old US Energy Department employee for allegedly attempting to provide material support or resources to Yemen’s Houthis.

“As alleged, a US government employee travelled overseas and used his specialised expertise in an attempt to aid the Houthis, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization backed by Iran,” said John A Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security.

“Ellaboudy acquired materials for the construction of explosive material and drones capable of delivering these explosives,” Eisenberg said. “These allegations are so deeply disturbing that they almost defy imagination.”

Ellaboudy is scheduled to appear before a federal judge on October 2 in the US state of Washington, the statement said.

The Department of Justice complaint alleges that in 2025, Ellaboudy, using an official passport, travelled from Washington to Oman. He then crossed the border into Yemen with the intent of travelling to Sanaa, reports AL Jazeera.
