Company-operated bus services are set to begin on six routes in Dhaka on Sunday, November 1, under the government’s bus route rationalisation initiative aimed at bringing discipline to the capital’s public transport system and easing traffic congestion.

Under the “One Company, One Route” system, designated transport companies will operate buses on specific routes, replacing the existing practice of multiple operators competing for passengers along the same corridors.

The six routes are Shibbari in Gazipur–Dhakeshwari Temple in Azimpur, Mirpur Zoo–Chinkutia in Keraniganj, Ghatarchar–Demra Staff Quarter, Ghatarchar–Kanchpur, Ghatarchar–Dhaur Bridge and Tongi College Gate–Dhakeshwari Temple.

A total of 816 buses have been proposed for the routes, including 796 non-air-conditioned and 20 air-conditioned vehicles.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place on Manik Mia Avenue at 11:00am on Sunday.

The initiative is part of a broader plan to reorganise Dhaka’s bus network into 32 integrated routes.

Authorities also plan to introduce designated bus stops, electronic ticketing and GPS tracking to improve passenger services and strengthen operational management.

However, some transport operators may initially remain outside the system because of disputes over route allocation and concerns about vehicle fitness and standards.

Authorities expect the new arrangement to curb unhealthy competition among bus operators, prevent indiscriminate passenger pick-ups and improve the overall management of public transport in the capital.
