Bangladesh Railway (BR) today launched operation of third pair of trains on Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route, designating Mohanagar Express to ply up to the beach town extending its journey beyond the port city of Chattogtram.

Minister for railways alongside road transport & bridges and shipping Sheikh Rabiul Alam inaugurated the service of the Mohanagar Express in its extended route from Dhaka Railway Station at Kamalapur.

So far two train pairs - Tourist Express and Cox's Bazar Express – were operating on the 467.83 km long route, which was opened in December 2023.

State Minister Habibur Rashid, railways ministry secretary Md. Fahimul Islam, BR’s director general Md. Afzal Hossain and related senior officials were present during the opening of the service.

BR officials said Mohanagar Express will run up to the beach town via Chattogram while unlike the two other trains, it would stop 12 stations.

They said besides the terminal stations of Dhaka and Cox's Bazar, it would stop at the stations of Airport, Narsingdi, Bhairab Bazar, Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, Akhaura, Kasba, Comilla, Laksam, Nangalkot, Feni, and Chattogram.

The Mohanagar Express so far used to make a halt at Kumira Station, which has been cancelled with introduction of its extended route.

The train will depart from Dhaka at 8:30 pm and reach Cox's Bazar at 6:00 am. During the reverse journey, the train will depart from Cox's Bazar at 9:00 am and arrive in Dhaka at 6:30 with the journey time being 9 hours 30 minutes in both ways.

The train’s service will remain suspended on Sunday while Cox’s Bazar will be its rake base or base depot where the watering, and cleaning services will be done.

BR officials said the third service in the route was introduced in view of increased passenger demands alongside following up the government’s election manifesto regarding the expansion of intercity rail services, reports BSS.
