Four new subjects will be introduced for Class Six students from 2027, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan has said.

The new subjects will cover joyful learning, technical education, sports and culture.

The minister made the announcement while responding to questions from journalists after inaugurating the 53rd National Summer Sports Competition at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla on Tuesday.

He said students would be introduced to joyful learning, technical education, sports and cultural activities from Class Six.

The education programme will also be reviewed and revised as necessary from 2028, he said, adding that additional textbooks could be introduced based on emerging needs.

The minister also said the number of qualified candidates was lower than the available seats at the higher-secondary level, which had caused difficulties in this year’s admission process.

He added that work was underway to include Nawab Faizunnesa in school textbooks.

At the event, Prime Minister’s Adviser and Spokesperson Mahdi Amin said gas and fuel prices had risen significantly in Bangladesh due to the war in the Middle East.

However, he said diesel prices in Bangladesh remained comparatively lower than in neighbouring countries, adding that the government was providing substantial subsidies to keep fuel prices under control.

He said the government was making every effort to address the situation, but the current crisis was global in nature. The government was working to resolve the problem in a reasonable manner while keeping the burden on the public as low as possible, he added.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon and Cumilla-10 lawmaker Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan attended the event as special guests.

Officials from various government agencies, including the Directorate General of Madrasa Education, Directorate of Technical Education and Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, were also present.

The event was chaired by Cumilla Education Board Chairman Professor Md Ahsan Parvez. Students from all education boards across the country participated in the competition.
