Cars on a queue at the Padma Bridge Toll Plaza on Saturday.
DHAKA, March 30 – The Padma Bridge has witnessed a surge in toll collection, generating Tk 4.25 crore on Friday as 39,637 vehicles crossed smoothly for Eid, prompting authorities to open an additional temporary toll booth at the Mawa end to manage the traffic.
Among the vehicles, nearly 10,000 motorcycles contributed significantly to the toll revenue. Authorities have ensured a smooth toll collection process to prevent congestion at the plaza.
Vehicles, including motorcycles, private cars, jeeps, microbuses, buses, and trucks, are passing through the bridge using nine lanes, with two specifically designated for motorcycles. Many travelers started their journey early in the morning to avoid the scorching summer heat, leading to long queues at the toll plaza in the early hours, which later eased at intervals.
Altaf Hossain, Director of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, said that all necessary preparations have been made to handle any situation and facilitate homebound travelers.
“The longer holiday period has helped manage the pressure more effectively, and toll collection has been running efficiently,” he added.
Kazi Ferdous, Chief Engineer of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, highlighted the various initiatives taken to ensure a seamless Eid journey.
“Since the holiday is longer this time, travelers are departing at different times instead of all at once, which has helped in managing traffic congestion. Our operators are working under constant supervision to maintain smooth toll collection and traffic flow,” he said.
Md. Anisur Rahman, Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Sreenagar Circle), said that law enforcement agencies are actively working to ensure passenger’s safety and maintain overall order. - UNB
