Stocks extended their upward momentum on Monday, marking a sixth consecutive trading session of gains as investors returned from the Eid holidays with renewed confidence and stronger participation in key sectors.

The benchmark DSEX index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) rose by 36.8 points, or 0.69 percent, to close at 5,373 points, up from 5,336 points in the previous session.

Market analysts said buying interest remained strong from the opening bell, with investors showing renewed optimism amid expectations of continued gains in the post-Eid market. Increased activity in selective high-performing stocks also helped sustain the rally.

Trading turnover on the premier bourse climbed 17.2 percent to Tk9.1 billion, compared to Tk7.8 billion in the previous session, reflecting higher participation from both institutional and retail investors.

Engineering stocks led the market in turnover, accounting for 17.4 percent of total transactions, followed by banking stocks at 16 percent and pharmaceuticals at 12.4 percent.

Most sectors ended the day in positive territory. The information technology sector posted the highest gain of 1.6 percent, while life insurance and banking sectors each advanced by 1.4 percent.

However, a few sectors closed lower, with jute stocks declining 1.6 percent, tannery shares falling 1.2 percent and general insurance issues slipping 1.1 percent.

Of the 392 issues traded on the DSE, 178 advanced, 150 declined and 68 remained unchanged, indicating a broadly positive market trend.

The Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also finished higher, extending the upbeat momentum. The CSE Selective Categories Index (CSCX) gained 45.2 points, while the All Share Price Index (CASPI) advanced by 61 points.
