Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin expressed optimism that the upcoming High-Level Conference, hosted by the UN in New York, would offer innovative solutions to address the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

He made the statement during a meeting with UNHCR Executive Committee Chair Ambassador Marcelo Vazquez-Bermudez at the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka, as stated in a press release from the ministry.

The two officials discussed various aspects of the crisis, including funding shortages, the political situation in Myanmar, the recent visit of the UN Secretary-General to Bangladesh, and efforts towards the repatriation of the Rohingya people. They stressed the urgent need for increased international support to address the crisis effectively.

Foreign Secretary Uddin reiterated Bangladesh’s continuous diplomatic efforts and highlighted the immense strain on host communities due to the large refugee population. He called for stronger global cooperation while reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to the safe and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingyas.

Ambassador Bermudez commended Bangladesh for its generosity in hosting such a significant number of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) and acknowledged the challenges posed by funding shortages. He assured that UNHCR and its partners would continue to support Bangladesh, particularly through the upcoming High-Level Conference.

As part of his visit, Ambassador Bermudez is also scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps to witness the situation on the ground firsthand.
