Shama renews Rohingya repatriation push
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today visited Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar and reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to ensuring the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (FDMNs) to their ancestral homeland in Myanmar.
Leading a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the state minister visited the FDMN camps in Ukhiya upazila and observed the humanitarian service delivery system being provided to the displaced Rohingyas, said a foreign ministry's press release here.
During the visit, the delegation toured food distribution centres operated by the World Food Programme, educational facilities for Rohingya children, a hospital run by M‚decins Sans FrontiŠres, and a livelihood initiative at Kutupalong Camp involving Rohingya women.
The state minister also held an interactive session with elected representatives of the Rohingya community, including youth and women members, and listened to their concerns with empathy.
She assured them of Bangladesh government's continued support to improve their quality of life in the camps while pursuing efforts to create a conducive environment for their safe and dignified return to Rakhine State.
Later, Shama attended a stakeholder consultation at the office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox's Bazar.
Officials from different government agencies, members of security forces, and representatives of the United Nations, national and international non-governmental organizations joined the consultation.
Addressing the meeting, the state minister thanked all officials and humanitarian workers for their dedicated service for the displaced Rohingyas and stressed the need for coordinated efforts in line with the government's policy to ensure their sustainable repatriation.
After the meeting, she briefed local journalists on her day-long activities and outlined the government's policy priorities in addressing the protracted Rohingya crisis.
She also underscored the government's renewed diplomatic efforts to highlight the Rohingya issue in regional and multilateral forums, reports BSS.
Officials concerned said the visit marked the first high-level tour by the Foreign Ministry to the Rohingya camps since the BNP-led government assumed office.
