Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the new government’s top priority is restoring peace and security through stronger law enforcement and anti-corruption measures, assuring that all citizens will enjoy equal rights regardless of their vote.
“As the head of government, I want to stress that whether you voted for the BNP, did not vote, or supported another party, you have equal rights under this government,” he said in a televised address.
Tarique Rahman added that while political views, religious beliefs, and ideologies may differ, the state belongs to all, and every citizen’s rights are equal. He noted the government begins its term amid a fragile economy, corruption, and weakened law-and-order systems.
“Restoring peace and security by improving law enforcement and controlling corruption is our main priority,” he said, highlighting the spread of gambling and drugs as major threats to public safety. Law enforcement agencies are taking strict measures to tackle these issues, he added.
The Prime Minister emphasised that all constitutional, government, and non-government institutions will operate according to established rules. “The rule of law—not party influence or coercion—will govern the state,” he said.
After taking the oath on Tuesday, Tarique Rahman paid tribute to martyrs at the National Memorial and visited the graves of former leaders Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. He then worked at the Secretariat and chaired a Cabinet meeting, continuing official duties until the evening.
Market Stability Ahead of Ramadan
Greeting the nation ahead of Ramadan, the Prime Minister urged traders not to exploit the holy month for profit, stressing that essential commodities must remain affordable. He said the government is ready to hear suggestions and complaints to maintain a stable market while protecting both consumers and business owners.
Ensuring Utilities and Practising Austerity
Tarique Rahman also directed authorities to ensure uninterrupted supply of gas, water, and electricity during iftar, tarawih, and sehri. He called on officials and the public to practice austerity, avoiding unnecessary use of resources, and set an example by encouraging ministers and BNP MPs to do the same.
At the first BNP parliamentary party meeting, he announced that no MP would import tax-free cars or claim government plots using privileges, reflecting a commitment to justice and ethical governance.
Addressing Urban Challenges and Employment
The Prime Minister acknowledged severe traffic congestion in Dhaka and other divisional cities and said alternative arrangements, including improvements to the nationwide railway system, are underway to ease population pressure and commuting challenges.
He stressed the importance of developing the country’s human resources, noting that skills in technology and education are essential in the era of artificial intelligence. He assured students and young people that the government will provide support to help them acquire knowledge and skills for employment and prosperity.
Implementing Promises
Recalling his pre-election statements, Tarique Rahman said the government has begun executing its plans and seeks continued public support to achieve a safe, self-reliant, and democratic Bangladesh.
