The High Court on Tuesday summarily dismissed a writ petition challenging the validity of BNP-nominated candidate MA Qayyum’s candidature in the Dhaka-11 constituency, effectively keeping him in the race for the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.

With the dismissal of the petition, the earlier decision by the election authorities declaring Qayyum’s nomination papers valid remains unchanged and in force.

The writ was filed by Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a rival candidate from the same constituency. Nahid sought judicial intervention, questioning the legality of the decision that allowed Qayyum to contest the election.

The High Court bench, comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan, rejected the petition at the preliminary hearing stage, finding no grounds to proceed with the challenge.

Legal observers say the ruling clears the way for BNP’s candidate to continue electioneering in Dhaka-11, a constituency expected to witness a competitive contest in the forthcoming parliamentary polls.
