Some students of Dhaka University burned an effigy following a statement made by a Jamaat leader of female students.

Dhaka, Jan 25 --General students of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday burned effigies in protest against what they termed defamatory and false remarks made by a Jamaat-e-Islami leader targeting the university and its female students.

The protesters burned effigies of Barguna District Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Md Shamim Ahsan at the foot of the Raju Memorial Sculpture around 7:00pm.

The protest followed comments allegedly made by Shamim Ahsan during an election rally on Saturday night, where he described the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) as a “drug den and brothel”.

In his remarks, Shamim Ahsan claimed that following the DUCSU elections, the situation at the university had changed due to the role of Islami Chhatra Shibir, and asserted that Jamaat-e-Islami was capable of eliminating injustice, extortion and corruption from the country.

The protesting students condemned the remarks, saying such statements tarnish the image of Dhaka University and demean female students. - UNB
