BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan today said the personality, political foresight and humanitarian qualities of Bangladesh's first female Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia are beyond full description.

"If we try to describe Khaleda Zia's vast personality, political programmes, liberal mindset and deep love for the people of Bangladesh, we could speak endlessly and still fall short," he said.

Dr Moyeen Khan was speaking as the chief guest at a condolence meeting organised to pray for the forgiveness of the soul of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

The World Human Rights Organization Bangladesh arranged the programme at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club. Advocate Mahbub Hossain, president of the Lawyers Association and World Human Rights Organization Bangladesh, presided over the event.

Recalling his association with Khaleda Zia, Dr Moyeen said he was a teacher at Dhaka University when Khaleda Zia encouraged him to enter politics during the 1991 general elections.

He said Khaleda Zia entrusted him with the responsibility of the Planning Ministry three times, giving him complete freedom to work without interference.

"No one can point to a single day and say she directed me to do a particular task. I learned from her how to work with humility even at the highest level of power," he said.

Dr Moyeen Khan said Khaleda Zia did not practise politics of vengeance and always respected democratic norms and the rule of law.

He said she would listen to the advice of ministers, advisers and experts before making decisions, but ultimately prioritised the interests of the people.

"She introduced a new trend in Bangladesh politics - the politics of loving people, not hating anyone or harbouring anger," he added.

Referring to the cases filed against her, he said nearly 47 false cases were lodged against Khaleda Zia, yet she protested within the legal framework and never crossed the bounds of the law, reports BSS.

"That is why we say she was, is and will remain above the conventional definition of a politician. Through her thoughts, work and love for the people, she stands as a true stateswoman," Dr Moyeen Khan said.
