Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday called for the implementation of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus’ commitment regarding the 13th parliamentary election.

Speaking at a press briefing following a meeting with Nicole N Chulick, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, at a hotel in Dhaka’s Gulshan, Dr Shafiqur said, “We had an open discussion with the US delegation, covering the current political situation, upcoming elections, and the reforms demanded by various parties.”

He said the US officials also enquired about Jamaat’s economic policies and foreign relations strategy should the party take on future leadership responsibilities. “We had a candid and constructive exchange on all fronts,” he added.

According to the Jamaat chief, the delegation raised concerns over issues such as minority rights, women’s rights, and labour conditions, all of which were addressed during the meeting.

Dr Shafiqur also urged the US to reconsider the 37% tariff imposed on Bangladeshi exports. “Given the current economic challenges, we’ve requested the US to convey our concerns to President Trump,” he said.

On the subject of democracy, he stated, “We practise democracy within our party and are committed to seeing democratic principles upheld throughout the nation. We’re ready to contribute to that goal.”

Referring to the timing of the upcoming general election, Dr Shafiqur mentioned a pledge reportedly made by Chief Adviser Dr Yunus. “He assured that the election would be held either by December this year or by June next year. We hope it takes place before Ramadan to avoid complications caused by the monsoon season.”

He warned that floods and natural disasters during the monsoon could disrupt the electoral process and called for timely polls to mitigate such risks.

Addressing the need for justice, Dr Shafiqur said the country is still reeling from past political violence. “Many remain hospitalised or disabled, and the families of martyrs continue to grieve. Justice must be served for the crimes committed by the Awami League, and we demand fair trials and accountability.”

Jamaat Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Central Executive Committee member Mobarak Hossain, and foreign affairs adviser Professor Dr Mahmudul Hasan were also present at the briefing.
