Mirza Abbas, a prominent member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee, called for the trial of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, labeling her as an autocrat. His statement came in response to remarks by Sarjis Alam of the National Citizen Party (NCP), who suggested that no elections should take place until Sheikh Hasina is put on trial.

“Sheikh Hasina must face trial. The people demand justice for the fascists in power. However, the public will not tolerate any further delay in the election process,” Abbas said during a brief conversation with journalists after visiting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at United Hospital in Dhaka.

Abbas also highlighted the importance of following due process in the country’s legal and political matters. He expressed concern over both domestic and international efforts that he believes are aimed at delaying the national elections, warning that such actions would severely harm the nation.

“The people must not be subjected to a new form of fascism in the name of resisting the existing one. No individual’s thoughts, beliefs, or opinions should be imposed upon others,” Abbas continued.

Earlier in the day, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, also visited Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at United Hospital to inquire about his health.

Mirza Fakhrul, who had attended a book launch at Suhrawardy Udyan’s book fair last week, fell ill due to the heavy dust at the venue. On Sunday, March 2, his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalization after medical consultation. He is currently under the care of Professor Dr. N.A.M. Momenuzzaman, Chief Cardiology Consultant at United Hospital.

Fakhrul’s wife, Rahat Ara Begum, and youngest daughter, Mirza Safaruh, have been by his side during his recovery. Doctors confirmed that his condition has stabilized and he is making progress toward a full recovery.
