Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, stated today that the interim government's primary focus is to repatriate Sheikh Hasina from India and bring her to trial for alleged crimes.

Referring to a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office, Alam claimed that the document outlined accusations of crimes against humanity committed by Sheikh Hasina during her time in power.

"The pressure on India to return Hasina to Bangladesh has been mounting following the release of the UN report, as well as various human rights organizations’ findings," Alam explained at a press briefing held this evening at the Foreign Service Academy.

Alam further pointed to a survey conducted by the Indian daily India Today, which found that 55% of Indian citizens support Hasina's repatriation to Bangladesh. A smaller percentage favored sending her to a third country, while only 16-17% of respondents were in favor of her remaining in India.

"The government remains steadfast in its efforts to ensure Sheikh Hasina's return to Bangladesh, and it is committed to holding her trial in her presence. This remains our top priority," Alam asserted.

When asked about the political future of the Awami League, Alam responded that it would ultimately be up to the people and political parties to determine whether the party should be allowed to continue its political activities. However, he emphasized that those responsible for crimes such as murder, enforced disappearances, and other violations must face justice.

The press briefing was also attended by Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.
