NCP Alleges Attack In Habiganj; Two Leaders Injured

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that its convoy was attacked by local Chhatra Dal activists following a July march in Habiganj on Monday evening, leaving Convener Nasiruddin Patwary and Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam injured.

The incident occurred in Habiganj municipality after NCP leaders concluded a march along the town's main road, a duty officer at Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station confirmed.

According to the NCP, several party activists were injured in the attack, while a vehicle carrying journalists was vandalised.

NCP Joint Member Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat said the convoy carrying Nasiruddin Patwary and Sarjis Alam came under a sudden attack as it was leaving the programme venue.

He alleged that both leaders, along with several NCP activists and journalists, sustained injuries.

Sifat also claimed that the attackers chased the NCP media team's microbus into the Habiganj District Circuit House compound, where they vandalised the vehicle and took away mobile phones and cameras.

"The attackers entered a state facility and carried out this disgraceful incident. They not only damaged the microbus but also took away mobile phones and cameras," he said, adding that the party had obtained video footage of the incident.

The NCP further alleged that attacks took place at several locations across the town, including in front of the Court Mosque, the Muktijoddha Complex and the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Earlier in the day, NCP leaders addressed rallies and joined marches in Habiganj town and Ajmiriganj upazila, where they criticised the BNP. The party claimed the attack was carried out in retaliation for those speeches.

A duty officer at Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station said all available police personnel had been deployed to the area.

"We are very busy. All forces from the police station have been sent to the spot. The situation will be informed later," the officer said.

Responding to the allegations, Habiganj District Jubo Dal Convener Jalal Ahmed said he had learned about the incident through social media and denied any involvement by Jubo Dal or Chhatra Dal activists.

Habiganj district Chhatra Dal President Shah Rajib Ahmed Ringon also rejected the allegations, claiming the incident was a "pre-planned drama" by the NCP following provocative speeches.

He alleged that local residents reacted to the remarks and insisted that Chhatra Dal should not be held responsible. Ringon also claimed that comments targeting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman had hurt the sentiments of party activists, but said Chhatra Dal had exercised restraint. He warned that if such remarks continued, the NCP would have to bear responsibility for any future incidents.
