Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, MP speaking as the chief guest at an exchange of views meeting with district-level officials at Barishal Circuit House this morning.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has called for transparent distribution of family cards, stressing that genuine beneficiaries must receive government assistance without favouritism or political bias.

He said a committee would be formed in every union under the leadership of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, with the local chairman and two social workers as members. The team will verify eligibility and oversee distribution to ensure fairness and accountability.

The minister made the remarks while addressing an exchange meeting with district-level officials at the Barishal Circuit House. He emphasised that beneficiary selection must remain non-partisan and strictly based on verified data.

Highlighting the importance of accurate statistics, he said the quality of governance and institutional strength of a state depend largely on reliable data. Proper data collection, preservation and timely dissemination are essential for effective policymaking, he noted. A strong and updated database system is now central to informed decision-making, he added.

Turning to healthcare, the minister said Barishal, despite being a key regional centre in southern Bangladesh, still lacks advanced medical facilities. Many patients face hardship travelling to Dhaka for specialised treatment. He said upgrading Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital into a modern facility and establishing a specialised trauma centre have become urgent priorities.

Superintendent of Police Farzana Islam attended the meeting as a special guest, while Deputy Commissioner Md. Khairul Alam Sumon presided. Officials from various government departments were also present.
