BNP leader Ishraque Hossain said on Thursday his supporters will intensify their ongoing movement if the authorities further delay his oath-taking as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

“If the swearing-in ceremony is not arranged immediately and the mayoral responsibilities are not handed over to me, the ongoing movement will intensify,” he said while speaking at Nagar Bhaban this afternoon.

“Defying the court's directive would be an act of contempt,” said Ishraque.

He also questioned why the authorities are failing to administer the oath to an elected mayor.

He also raised concerns over how the government plans to swear in 300 elected MPs in future under such circumstances.

Earlier in the day, the supporters of Ishraque gathered in the Nagar Bhaban and staged a sit-in in support of Ishraque.

They also chanted slogans saying ‘No more delay over the mayor’, 'The fight continues under the leadership of Ishraque Bhai’ and ‘Ishraque Bhai—we haven’t forgotten you,’ the demonstrators created a charged atmosphere around the premises.

Despite the rain, Ishraque's supporters gathered in large numbers and padlocked the gates of various DSCC departments, leading to a complete suspension of services.

Many citizens returned without receiving any services.

Supporters of Ishraque, along with DSCC staff, have been staging continuous protests since May 15 demanding that he be sworn in as mayor, forcing a halt in all activities at Nagar Bhaban, reports UNB.
