According to witnesses, workers from Tobin Tex factory took to the streets early in the morning, demanding overdue payments, bonuses, and protesting the firing of 65 workers from the factory. The workers, who numbered around 8,000 to 10,000, claimed that production at the factory had been halted from March 29 to April 7, and that the factory management had failed to pay them for the entire month.
While the factory authorities had promised a 65% bonus, workers said they only received 50% and were left without any prior notice before being laid off. In response to these issues, the workers staged a protest on Wednesday morning, refusing to return to work.
When police arrived to disperse the crowd, tensions escalated. Workers began throwing water bottles at the officers, prompting them to respond with baton charges. The situation quickly worsened as workers blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway by felling an electric pole.
Mizanur Rahman Mizan, inspector at Bhulta police camp, stated that when officers attempted to intervene, the workers turned aggressive and attacked the police. According to Mehedi Hasan, Assistant Superintendent of Narayanganj Police, ten policemen were injured during the clash.
Authorities are currently working to bring the situation under control.
