Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus conferred the prestigious Independence Award-2025 upon seven eminent individuals today, recognizing their extraordinary contributions to the nation across various fields.

The awardees, who have made remarkable strides in their respective domains, are:

1. Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam (posthumously) for his contributions to Science and Technology

2. Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud (posthumously) for his literary works

3. Novera Ahmed (posthumously) for her cultural contributions

4. Sir Fazle Hasan Abed (posthumously) for his unparalleled service in social welfare

5. Mohammad Mahbubul Haque Khan (Azam Khan) (posthumously) for his role in the Liberation War and culture

6. Badruddin Mohammad Umar for his outstanding contributions to education and research

7. Abrar Fahad (posthumously) for his bravery and activism as a young protester

At the ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium this morning, the family members of the posthumous awardees received the honours on their behalf. Notably, Badruddin Mohammad Umar, who was also recognized for his contributions, expressed his reluctance to accept the award. In recognition of his wishes, the government has decided to display a replica of the award conferred upon him at the National Museum.

Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, who led the event, conveyed gratitude to the interim government for facilitating the recognition of these distinguished individuals. In his speech, Chief Adviser Professor Yunus expressed immense pride in honouring Badruddin Umar, highlighting the significant impact of his contributions to education and research.

The ceremony was attended by a number of distinguished guests, including advisers, special assistants to the Chief Adviser, the heads of the three branches of the armed forces, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, and senior government officials.

Earlier, the interim government announced the seven distinguished awardees for the "Independence Award 2025," the nation’s highest state honour. Additionally, the government reinstated the posthumous Independence Award previously awarded to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, reversing a previous decision made under the regime of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
