Khulna, Mar 19 -At least 50 shops in a market were gutted in a massive fire in Khulna city early Wednesday.

According to the Fire Service source, the fire erupted from one of the shops and engulfed the adjacent shops at Picture Palace SuperMarket around 5:40am.

Nine firefighting units from several stations rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control after around one and half hours of efforts.

The origin of the fire and extent to damages could not be known yet.

The burnt shops included that of cosmetics, clothes, shoes, bags and other products.

Kotwali police station’s Officer-in-Charge Hawladar Sanowar Hossain Masum said they visited the scene and it was still unclear whether it was a fire incident or sabotage.

The affected traders said they had been doing business at the market for the past one year and the fire now smashed all their dreams as they invested ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. - UNB
