Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday joined a discussion marking World Habitat Day 2026, focusing on universal housing and sustainable urbanisation.

The programme, organised by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, is being held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka under the theme “Universal Housing, Sustainable Urbanisation.”

Before joining the programme, the prime minister planted a Swarna Champa tree on the premises of the conference centre.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmad Sohel Manzur and ministry secretary Md Obaidur Rahman, among others, attended the programme.

A three-day housing fair has also been organised at the lobby of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre as part of the World Habitat Day observance.

A total of 157 stalls have been set up at the fair, featuring products and services from the housing and construction sectors, banking services, RAJUK, the Department of Architecture, the Public Works Department and other agencies under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

The prime minister is expected to inaugurate the fair after the discussion programme.

A seminar on planned urbanisation and sustainable housing will also be held at the conference centre at 2:30pm.

World Habitat Day is being observed across all divisions and districts of the country through various programmes, including publication of a souvenir, special discussions on television and radio, and the display of banners, posters and festoons at important locations.

World Habitat Day has been observed in Bangladesh and countries around the world since 1986.
