Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the second-biggest global box office opener of all time, earning $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend and easily surpassing its estimated $225 million production budget.
Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the latest Spider-Man film trails only Avengers: Endgame, which grossed more than $1.2 billion globally during its opening weekend in 2019.
The film also recorded the second-highest opening weekend in North America, collecting $335 million at the domestic box office.
The strong debut provides a significant boost for Marvel Studios ahead of the December release of Avengers: Doomsday, following several recent Marvel films that fell short of box office expectations.
Set several years after Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Brand New Day follows Peter Parker as he continues fighting crime in a world where no one remembers his secret identity.
The film has received largely positive reviews, with many critics describing it as Tom Holland's strongest performance as Spider-Man.
Internationally, the movie earned $572 million from more than 73,000 screens, including $121 million in China and $49 million in the United Kingdom, according to distributor Sony Pictures.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige described the opening as "truly phenomenal" and thanked audiences for supporting the film in cinemas.
Spider-Man remains one of Marvel's most successful franchises, with Spider-Man: No Way Home earning nearly $2 billion worldwide.
The strong performance also reflects the continued recovery of the global cinema industry after the pandemic, with North American box office revenue projected to exceed $10 billion for the first time since 2019.
Blockbusters including Toy Story 5, Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have each surpassed $1 billion globally, while Brand New Day and The Odyssey are also on course to cross the same milestone.
