UN Reaffirms Support for Strengthening Bangladesh's Health
UN Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Kirstine Damkjær, reaffirmed the UN's continued support for strengthening Bangladesh’s healthcare infrastructure during her visit today.
"UNOPS is dedicated to enhancing Bangladesh's healthcare system by providing accessible and sustainable solutions," Damkjær said during a visit to the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH), according to a UN press release.
The Assistant Secretary-General emphasized the UN’s role as a key partner in helping Bangladesh achieve its healthcare objectives.
NIDCH is one of 29 hospitals across Bangladesh where UNOPS, in collaboration with partners like the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and funding from the Global Fund, has established PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) plants to bolster the national healthcare system.
This initiative is part of Bangladesh’s Covid-19 emergency response plan, with strategically selected partner hospitals, including NIDCH, to ensure underserved communities have access to essential medical services.
Through close cooperation with its partners, UNOPS has also supported the procurement of critical medical equipment and supplies and enhanced healthcare infrastructure by installing oxygen therapy units. These efforts have significantly strengthened healthcare systems in Bangladesh’s most underserved regions, improving the delivery of essential services during emergencies like the Covid-19 pandemic.
