Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud has confirmed that there will be no recount of votes in the Dhaka-8 constituency.
In this closely watched seat, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Mirza Abbas faced strong competition from National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate Nasir Uddin Patwari.
Abbas, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, secured victory by 4,980 votes, receiving 56,552 votes compared to Patwari’s 51,572.
Tensions rose between supporters of both candidates after the results were announced. Both Abbas and Patwari met with the returning officer and submitted complaints regarding the vote count.
Earlier, at around 2:30 a.m. on election night, NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan held a press conference demanding a recount under the supervision of the Election Commission. The EC, however, has ruled that no recount will take place.
