An earthquake shook Thakurgaon and surrounding areas today.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the quake was of minor intensity measured 3.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at 8:34:44 am.

The epicenter was located in Atgharia Bazar (Latitude 25.97°N, Longitude. 88.15°E)
in Thakurgaon, about 331 kilometres northwest of the Meteorological Department's seismic monitoring centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Talking to BSS at 12 noon today, Meteorologist Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Meteorological Office, said that Bangladesh is at risk of major earthquakes due to its location along three active tectonic plate faults.

He laid special emphasis on ensuring adequate initial preparedness, public awareness and modern technology to reduce earthquake-related casualties and damage, reports BSS.
