Youth awarded one month in prison for illegally extracting sand in Kuakata



Patuakhali: A mobile court has sentenced a youth named Mohibullah (38) to one month in prison for illegally extracting sand from the Lemburbon spot of Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali. Kuakata Municipality Administrator and Executive Magistrate Yasin Sadek handed down the sentence at around 1:30 pm on Friday.

Sources said that the youth accused of illegally extracting sand from the beach without permission was given one month in prison under sections 4 and 15 of the Sand Mahal and Soil Management Act, 2010.

Earlier, sand was being extracted illegally and supplied by truck for the construction of the Marine Drive road in Kuakata under the supervision of influential people. After local citizens spread the matter on social media, the local administration conducted a mobile court.

It is not known whether the excavators and trucks used for illegal sand extraction and supply have not been seized as of the time of writing this report. - Gofran Palash
